Open Source Foundation Secures Sovereign AI Compute Cluster in Iceland

Transparent Research at Planetary Scale

REYKJAVIK - As leading commercial AI laboratories concentrate computational power within proprietary data centers, a coalition of international universities has established an open counterweight: the Aurora Open Compute Hub.

Constructed inside a zero-emission geothermal facility outside Reykjavik, the installation houses 16,000 specialized AI accelerators dedicated exclusively to peer-reviewed public scientific research.

"Scientific inquiry cannot thrive if frontier computational capabilities remain behind proprietary corporate paywalls," said Dr. Sophia Lindqvist, executive director of the Open Compute Alliance.

The cluster will immediately begin training open-weights foundation models for climate modeling, molecular biology, and multilingual natural language processing.

Every training run will publish full data lineage, carbon expenditure metrics, and checkpoint weights for independent verification by researchers worldwide.
