CAMBRIDGE - In a major breakthrough for global data sovereignty, quantum physicists at Cambridge and Delft have executed the first sustained quantum key distribution (QKD) across an active deep-sea fiber optic link.
Spanning 340 kilometers beneath the North Sea, the experiment transmitted entangled single-photon cryptographic keys between ground stations in Lowestoft and The Hague without disrupting commercial internet traffic on adjacent fiber pairs.
The achievement validates that the existing global network of transoceanic subsea cables can be upgraded to quantum-safe encryption protocols without laying expensive new maritime conduits.
With intelligence agencies warning that foreign adversaries are already harvesting encrypted traffic to decrypt once quantum computers mature, QKD offers mathematically guaranteed security.
Financial clearing houses and government diplomatic networks are expected to be the earliest commercial adopters of the subsea quantum key exchange protocol.
